The Aquila Game Reserve is situated in the Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) approximately 2 hours drive from Cape Town. It is a privately owned reserve set on 4500 hectares of land. The reserve is named after the Black Eagle, a rare endangered bird, native to the area.
The Klein Karoo is a semi desert area. It is a dry and arid area but plays host to a variety of succulents, dwarf baobabs, towering cliffs, rock formations and clear streams. A vast array of desert flowers bloom from July to September, transforming the arid land into a carpet of orange, yellow and white.
Declared a nature reserve in 1985, the Aquila Game Reserve is a 4 star safari destination and one of the few places close to Cape Town where one may see the ‘big 5’ i.e. Elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard, in the wild.
The Aquila Game Reserve also contains a natural wetland area which makes for good bird watching.
Accommodation is luxurious, comprising of chalets and cottages built from natural materials, that blend into the surrounding environment. A restaurant, pool bar and cigar bar allow for easy relaxing.
Game drives in open vehicles are organized for the morning and the evening. They are usually 2 – 3 hours long. Experienced rangers will introduce their passengers to the wonders of the bush and the wild life.
Also on offer are horse back safaris and quad biking.
Khoi San rock art, estimated at over 70 000 years old is to be found on the reserve.
Aquila Game Reserves offers both day tours as well as overnight packages. You can drive yourself to Aquila, or else a transfer from Cape Town can be organized. Fly in safaris are also available.
