Bloubergstrand is situated on the Blouberg coast about 20 minutes drive from Cape Town. Blouberg or Blaauberg means ‘Blue Mountain’ and is named, not as expected after Table Mountain but after another nearby mountain. However, it is from here that the well known views of the flat topped Table Mountain across a sweeping bay originate. One also gets good views of Robben Island.
The main beach at Blouberg is known as Big Bay. It is known for its surfing and kite surfing, playing host to major surfing and kite surfing competitions throughout the year. The beach, with its long white sandy stretches and sand dunes is generally windy but popular with walkers and whale watchers.
In 1806, Blouberg was the scene of the British Invasion of the Dutch Colony. The first casualties of the Battle of Blaauwberg drowned when their boat was driven into the rocks by large surf and capsized. The British went on to defeat the Dutch and occupy the entire Cape Colony.
'Ons Huisie', meaning 'Our little house', is a well known national monument in Blouberg. It was the first house of Frederick Louis Stadler who, after the Battle of Blaauwberg, became owner of the farm that is now the area of Bloubergstrand. ‘Ons Huisie’ is currently a well known restaurant.
Bloubergstrand falls within a marine nature reserve and thus no fishing is allowed unless you are in possession of a valid permit.
