Butterfly world is a large, free flying butterfly park situated on the R44 off the N1 highway about 20 minutes drive from the city center near Paarl.
Contained within a large greenhouse of over 1500m2, is a large indoor garden of exotic plants and water features. In this tropical paradise, exotic butterflies fly freely around, landing on the various plants and fruits.
Tropical butterflies are raised on breeding farms in Central America and South East Asia. Their pupae are exported to South Africa to butterfly world to emerge in the tropical greenhouse.
The greenhouse is divided into separate areas. Once you pass through the butterfly area you enter part of the greenhouse which contains marmosets, a small blue duiker, lizards, chameleons and parrots. All these animals have been rescued from animal traffickers or have come to the center as unwanted pets.
Also found at Butterfly World is a large selection of indigenous spiders and scorpions housed within the Martin Filmer Spider room. There are also a variety of snakes housed here.
The outdoor garden hosts a meerkat enclosure and a tortoise enclosure.
Butterfly World has a craft shop selling butterfly related curios and a coffee garden where light meals are served.
Butterfly World is open from 9-5 in summer and 10-4 in winter.
