There are various historical buildings found here, many of them still used and open for tourists. The oldest building in the country is the Castle of Good Hope that the Dutch East India Company completed in 1679. It is a combination of early modern fortress architecture and medieval architecture laid out in a pentagon style. The star fort styled building contains a popular museum inside called the South Africa Military Museum. Tours of the castle are offered.
