The Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is situated 3 hours drive from Cape Town in the Little Karoo at the base of the Warmwaterberg Mountains.
The Warmwaterberge are so called because of the number of natural hot springs that well up in its foothills. However the Little Karoo is an arid semi desert area with wide open plains, rugged mountains and rocky outcrops.
Situated on 54 000 hectares, the reserve is home to a variety of wild animals, including the big 5: Buffalo; Elephant; Leopard; Rhinoceros and Lion. Thanks to a successful breeding project which aims at returning white lions to the wild, Sanbona is one of the few places where white lions now roam freely. Sanbona is also home to the small Riverine Rabbit, the 13th most endangered animal in the world.
There is a choice of accommodation, from Dwyka luxury tented lodge, a group of 7 luxury tents situated at the base of a ravine, to Gondwana lodge, a 12 roomed lodge, suitable for families with children and Tilney Manor, a luxurious manor house with 6 rooms designed for privacy and tranquility.
Guests have the option of two game drives per day on open vehicles accompanied by a ranger and tracker. Also available is stargazing, visits to San rock art formations, nature walks and spa treatments.
The Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is one of the few places close to Cape Town where one can see animals in their natural habitat, roaming freely in the wild.
