Situated 39km from Cape Town at Exit 39 off the N1 national highway, the Tygerberg Zoo is the only zoo in the Western Cape. It houses over 1400 animals representing 280 species. Known as an endangered wildlife breeding center, the zoo specializes in breeding rare endangered seldom seen species.
Set on 24 hectares, not all of which are used, the zoo comprises of about 150 enclosures ranging from large paddocks for antelope and big cats (lions and tigers) to small aviaries. Tygerberg Zoo does not hold any of the larger mammals like elephants and rhinoceroses. The largest cloven hoofed animal that it holds is the zebra.
It is home to 61 mammal species, 160 bird species and 63 reptile species. The zoo has many of the mini antelope such as red and blue duikers, grysbok and suni. Its primate collection ranges from marmosets to chimpanzees. It also has a bird collection and a reptile collection.
The zoo has a yard farm area designed for smaller children.
There is a café offering refreshments.
The zoo is open from 9-5 everyday.
