World of Birds

Cape Town hotels

The World of Birds is the largest bird park in Africa. It is set on over 4 hectares of land. It houses over 3000 birds and a variety of small animals. The birds are housed in large aviaries through which you walk, enabling you to get close to the birds as they fly, perch and nest around you.

Notable amongst the birds are the owls. The World of Birds has many different owl species. Large Eagle Owls, Barn Owls and Great Horned Owls, stare at you as you walk slowly past.

The large birds of prey are also spectacular. Many of the birds have been rescued from illegal traffickers. Others were injured and brought to the center.

Other birds on show include hornbills, plovers, swans, boerbulls, flamingoes, ducks and cranes to list a few.

The World of Birds also houses 38 squirrel monkeys in a large walkthrough enclosure. These small animals are very inquisitive and have been known to steal unsuspecting visitors’ jewellery, pens and anything else that may be loose on your person.

Meerkats, banded mongeese, ground squirrels and bat eared foxes are also to be found here, as are skinks, iguanas and tortoises.

There is a small café, ‘The Robin’s Nest’, serving drinks, snacks and light meals. A small curio shop sells mementoes and souvenirs.

The World of Birds is in Valley Road, Hout Bay and is open everyday from 9am to 5pm.
