Traditional cuisine is a mixture of Indonesian, Malaysian, French, German, British and Dutch. Plenty of seafood is available served from fish & chips to crayfish, langoustine and prawns, and includes hake, kabeljou, sole, white-steenbras, red-steenbras, Cape salmon, yellowtail, angelfish, tuna, bluefish, calamari (squid), octopus, oysters and mussels. A favourite local fish is the kingklip.
Meat is extremely good with beef, lamb, venison and veal on the menus. Chicken and duck are also readily available at most restaurants. South Africans enjoy braaiing (barbecuing), which makes boerewors (sausage), kebabs and lamb-chops popular. Fruit is plentiful with both temperate and tropical available.
Some of the local specialties are “bobotie” a curried lamb or beef; “ smoorsnoek” a stew of fish, potatoes and tomatoes; “bokkoms” salted dried fish; “melktert” a custard tart or perhaps “koeksusters” which is braided pastry that is deep fried in syrup.
Cape Town offers all cuisines and you will find European, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indian restaurants. Wine has been made in Cape Town for centuries and some of the best wines in the world are produced in the Cape. Castle and Lion lager are the most popular beers. Cape Town has a number of cigar lounges from smokers. Restaurants and pubs along the Waterfront afford magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean, the City Bowl and Table Mountain.
