Cape Town Shopping

 

Most shops open between 0800 and 1730 but later in places such as the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk. All stores must charge the Value Added Tax (VAT) of 14%, but foreign visitors can claim back VAT on purchases over R250.

Adderley Street
An area of shopping centres, malls, curio, jewellery stores and fashion shops.

Atlantic Seaboard
Sea Point has many fashion and clothing shops down its Main Road , as does Camps Bay .

Canal Walk
Just outside the Cape Town city centre, is a large shopping mall with hundreds of stores, cinemas, indoor karting track, skate park, gaming arcade, and restaurants, open until 2100. Located on the N1 ten minutes drive north of the city (021 555 4433).

Cavendish Square
Over 200 stores, restaurants, cinemas and food court in this large shopping mall in Claremont . To reach Cavendish Square follow the M3 towards Muizenberg and take the Paradise Road turn off, then into Protea Road and at the traffic lights turn into Cavendish Square (021 657 5620).

Greenmarket Square
The cobble-stoned Greenmarket Square , off Burg Street in the centre of town is a craft market with carvings, masks and drums, beadwork, jewellery, clothing, leatherwork and ceramics.

Long Street
Long Street has many small shops and an area of character.

St George's Mall
A mall with open air cafes and stalls in the middle that bustles with activity and live entertainment provided by buskers and singers.

Tyger Valley Centre
Tyger Valley Shopping Centre is a large Mall in the Northern Suburbs located at 1 Bezuidenhout Drive , Bellville (021 914 1822).

V&A Waterfront
Lots of high quality shops and craft markets (021 408 7600).

Cape Town Markets
Sunday markets are at Hout Bay , Green Point Stadium and daily markets at Greenmarket Square in the centre of Cape Town .

South Africa VAT
VAT of 14% is levied on nearly all goods and services. Foreign tourists may claim back VAT paid on items that will be taken out of the country. Make sure you collect a Tax Invoice from the retailer which has the words “ tax invoice” on; the sellers name and address, VAT registration number, date; tax invoice number; description of the goods; cost of goods; and the amount of VAT charges and for purchases over R1000 your name and address.

On departure you must present your purchases and original tax invoices at the VAT refund administration office or an appointed RSA customs and excise official on departure. The claim your refund at the VAT refund desk. Visitors will be requested to fill out a VAT Refund Control Sheet (VAT 255). Only claims where the value of goods is greater than R250, an administration fee of 1.5% of the VAT will be deducted subject to a minimum of R10 and a maximum of R 250.
