Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs include the residential area of Rosebank, Rondebosch, Claremont, Newlands, Wynberg, Grassy Park as well as the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden.
Traveling South from the city you pass Rosebank with its historical Mostert’s Mill; the neo-classical Rhodes Memorial; the University of Cape Town and the Groote Schuur Homestead.
Claremont is home to the Cavendish Square Shopping Centre, with more than 220 stores, 15 restaurants and 16 cinemas. Newlands is home of the Western Province Cricket and Rugby teams. The Josephine Mill houses a museum with water-wheel and blacksmith’s tools with milling demonstrations.
Wynberg on the south banks of the Liesbeeck River is named after Oude Wijnberg (Old Wine Mountain in 1682 and where you will find a number of interesting museums. Families who were forced to relocate in terms of the Groups Areas Act in the early 1960’s occupied Grassy Park and the adjacent Cape Flats suburbs.
